INDIA HIGHER EDUCATION - ROLE IN NATION BUILDING
While public spending on education as a whole is around 3.6% of India's GDP, the allocation for higher education sector stands at 0.5% of the GDP. Owing to constrained investments, the higher education sector is unable to cope with the growing market demands and competition. Increased private investment is imperative to expand infrastructure and provide greater access to quality education. India's target of doubling the gross enrolment ratio (GER) in higher education by 2020 will come at a price of Rs 10 lakh crore and require an additional 33000 institutions.Private Universities should focus on deploying funds to build capacity for dissemination of knowledge and to support economic growth by providing trained professionals. On the other hand, Public Universities should continue to stand at the frontier of research by creating and encouraging new ideas and milestones. Research Universities should focus on creating knowledge, ideas and innovations while teaching should focus on the dissemination of knowledge. The United States is undoubtedly the world leader in the business of higher education and AUSIB through its strong US presence can create opportunities for Indian Universities to collaborate with US Universities. These collaborations will help both US and Indian Universities to increase their footprint in India and thus play an important role in nation building. This knowledge partnership between US and the Indian Universities will also pave the way for research collaborations, concepts like Meta Universities etc.
