Education is defined as, ‘participation of the individual in the social consciousness of the race’. I believe that this is the basic objective behind earning an education. It deals with the learner’s consciousness to assimilate in the community at large and feel that education is a thread based on continuity and evolution.
When one mentions progressive schooling, it runs like a theme from Iva Ibbotson’s writings. Currently, it is synonymous with the concept and educational funding act of ‘No Child is Left Behind’. Progressive schooling is high on experience than on learning by mere cramming. It is a fantastic concept and syllabus setters need to make a note of how learning is to be imparted. As known by all and sundry, pedagogy if not taken care can disrupt interest in learning a particular topic or subject. And as obvious, it can have severe consequences. For example, Maths is a subject that needs to be taught well; teachers and academicians need to generate interest among learners and keep them motivated. It is important and it is a subject that most of us are dependent on in the long run.
While returning to the concept of progressive schooling, it is a great module that inculcates qualities in children that enable to become better citizens: experiential learning and hands-on studies. Further children imbibe a sense of social responsibility and understand the democratic concept early. Moreover progressive schools are sticklers for problem solving and analytical thinking. Text books are not relevant here; there could be other learning aids to help a child learn and grow. Encapsulating everything, it brings about a sense of curiosity in the child.
Progressive Schooling dates back to the days of Locke and Rousseau. Locke had stated, “Truth and knowledge are out of observation and experience rather than manipulation of accepted or given ideas.” Rousseau made it clear in the good old days that mere mugging up did not lead to education. This is exactly what most of us feel. He was a visionary and he just about underlined the objective behind education.
Therefore, progressive schooling is great to begin with in today’s world and thus can help a child to educate and learn for the better of the world at large.
