HIGHER EDUCATION IN INDIA – OPPORTUNITIES
The Indian Higher Education sector is rising to meet global benchmarks on key parameters. Further efforts are needed to enhance the accessibility, funding and the quality of higher education in the country. Currently India has 550 Universities and 31000 colleges, making it one of the largest hubs in terms of capacity. While the number of enrollments in India is high owing to the size of its population, the gross enrollment ratio (GER) is only 15% way below the global average of 26%. The Indian Government has set a target of achieving a GER of 30% by 2020.
Even if India achieves global average of 26% by 2020, it means doubling the number of students and expanding its capacity in Higher Education. This means India needs at least 500 Universities and 33,000 more colleges in the next 8 years. Where will all this additional capacity come from ? Here is an opportunity for the private sector to bridge this gap as the government alone cannot fulfill the requirement.
