It is the reinvention of the wheel; it is synonymous with excellence and also called the PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Act) model. While it aims at better business processes, it also involves a lot of study. It is a four-phase process that acts on the following:
- Plan: Setting business expectations and analyzing what is doable.
- Do: Execute the plan.
- Check: Study the actual results and map these against the expected results.
- Act: Evaluate and take corrective actions.
If followed meticulously, quality is highlighted and it can set a paradigm of business excellence. It was popularized by Dr. W. Edwards Deming who popularized this methodology. It is popular in Information Technology organizations. In organizations that follow the Six Sigma methodology, the Deming Wheel is also referred to as define, measure, analyze, improve, control (DMAIC).
The Deming Wheel aims at reducing or avoiding analysis paralysis. Instead of going wrong, it aims at getting the business or process right. It is an excellent initiative to begin with!
